Why Thailand and Bali?

When shopping for real estate the accepted dictum is: “Location, Location, Location.” The fundamental reason for choosing Southeast Asia as a tour destination is equally simple: “Value, Value, Value!” As the costs of European travel have skyrocketed in recent years, driven by European inflation and a plummeting dollar, Americans are wisely seeking more affordable travel destinations. For example, in Bangkok or Ubud a delicious restaurant dinner with drinks can be had for $7-9 and lunch from a street vendor for $1-2. A mid-range, air-conditioned hotel room with private bath can be had easily for $45 per night, less in Bali. A 45-minute taxi ride in from the airport is about $12. Even airfares (a former deterrent) are comparable and even cheaper than fares to Europe.

Beyond cost, there are other compelling reasons for considering a tour in Southeast Asia. Thailand and Bali are both truly exotic, beautiful, fascinating, non-western discovery destinations. Each includes an abundance of stunning natural wonders – mountains, caves, waterfalls, lakes, volcanoes, beaches, and islands. Both retain a rich and varied cultural heritage. Their respective architectures, both ancient and modern, are evocative, distinct, and beautiful. Traditional dance is a visual feast of stylized motion and communication. Cuisine is diverse, inexpensive, and absolutely delicious. Thailand with its Buddhist culture and Bali with its Hindu/Animism are friendly, welcoming, easy-going societies with long traditions of hospitality.

Lastly, traveling is easy in Bali and Thailand. Both have well-developed tourism infrastructures – good public transportation, roads, budget airlines, hotels, and broadly spoken English in the hospitality industry. As a bonus, their tropical climates make them perfect winter destinations and each is a shopping paradise for handicrafts, local art, clothing, and jewelry.
